Universal Smart Energy Framework

Energy21 is one of the conceptual founders of the Universal Smart Energy Framework (USEF) and is still involved in the further development of the framework.

USEF is considered to be one of the most exhaustive market model descriptions around and is adopted throughout Europe as the working standard for shaping new market rules for smart energy applications and flexibility products.

Blockchain for the sake of blockchain...?

Blockchain technology is often mentioned as the overall solution for local energy transactions.
However, most blockchain-based energy projects are based on peer-to-peer transactions. 

We believe that a market mechanism offers many advantages and that blockchain technology should never become a goal on itself.

Stedin and Energy21 first and foremost examined the concept of open, local energy markets as a solution, resulting in the design of the LES. Only then the applicability of blockchain technology was examined.

Layered Energy System

Based on the USEF Framework, Stedin and Energy21 have designed the Layered Energy System. This market model forms a solution to a variety of existing and future problems resulting from the energy transition, incl. grid congestion, system imbalance, energy poverty and grid defection.


The Layered Energy System:

  • uses an alternative tax scheme that stimulates sharing flexibility
  • is scalable
  • can be embedded in the existing national market model
  • improves access to flexibility for all market players
  • improves flexibility for grid operators
